Outdoor education has been introduced to AVESC, Bennerley site as a full time part of our curriculum. It has been organised so that learning takes place in the outdoors.Bennerley’s Outdoor education program has been designed to give pupils a variety of adventurous challenges and outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, canoeing, swimming, sledging and group games.
Outdoor education often involves small groups actively engaged in adventurous activities for personal growth under the guidance of an instructor or teacher. We provide activities that build self-confidence and self-esteem this we consider to be fundamental to any young person’s development. Outdoor activities provide valuable alternative, often non-competitive, avenues for achievement, as well as opportunities to develop independence and self-reliance. Through successfully facing up to the challenges which outdoor activities provide, overcoming fears and apprehensions along the way, young people make major strides in confidence, with positive effects for all aspects of their development.
Participation in exciting and enjoyable outdoor activities with teachers, instructors and peers reinforces a positive attitude to education and contributes significantly to the general ethos of our school. Direct experience out of doors stimulates and reinforces learning across many areas of the curriculum, and the use of the outdoors encourages our pupils to take greater responsibility for their own learning. The pupils will use their experiences to gain qualifications in individual activities and gain credits towards an ASDAN, Personal Development Programme Award.
